Character Information: Luceti(?)
Character
Name: Tenzin
Fandom: Avatar: the Legend of Korra
Gender: Male
Age: 51
Time Period: Post season 1.
Wing Color: Yellow.
History: Can be found in his wiki!
Personality: With the dual burdens of being the last remaining airbending master following Aang's death and striving to uphold his father's legacy in Republic City, it's no surprise that Tenzin is a very serious sort of man (a trait, apparently, that's been with him since childhood). He lives his life very closely to the ways of the air nomads of old and trains his children in the same methods- spirituality, first and foremost, as well as the adaptability of taking things as they come. His principles and duties are things he holds in high esteem and strives to uphold to no less than the best of his abilities, whether it's training airbenders, serving as a representative on the city's council or being a supportive father and husband.
For the most part, he's calm and collected, wise and sympathetic to others. Tenzin frequently offers advice to Korra over the course of the first season, on various matters (her inability to airbend, her fear of Amon and his capabilities, the lack of wisdom that he felt was in joining Tarrlok's task force), taking up a paternal role for her rather quickly upon her coming to stay on Air Temple Island. When Korra breaks down after her close call with the equalists, he comforts her by saying that admitting her fears is "the first and most difficult step in overcoming them". He strives to get through to her about the fact that being the Avatar isn't just about conflict and physical violence- it's about a balance of the elements and the spirit.
Tenzin is an intelligent and wise person, if not necessarily very well-spoken at times, and as patient as he can possibly be when dealing with others. Attempting to teach Korra airbending is a trial, with her groundedness in physicality and powering through obstacles that way- he's calm and composed while explaining fundamentals to her (and to his children), only coming around to losing his temper when she destroys an ancient airbending training tool in her own anger and frustration (also expressing anger when she disobeys a direct order and heads out to watch pro-bending matches, eventually winding up playing as well), crestfallen when she essentially calls him a bad mentor. Even then, he seems to forgive her easily once she's apologized.
He appears to want to see the best in people and give them the benefit of the doubt in most situations. When Korra claims that Amon was able to remove a person's bending permanently, he claims it shouldn't be possible but is quick to confirm that he believes what she's saying. When Tarrlok lies about the equalists kidnapping Korra (himself being the real culprit), Tenzin has no reason to doubt him and so believes it to be true until he and a few others infiltrate the equalist base and discover she's not there. On being told that Meelo is not, in fact, meditating, and is just asleep sitting up, his reaction isn't one of anger but more of a good-natured exasperation. "At least he's got the relaxing part down." Alongside being fairly difficult to anger, there's no doubt that he loves his family and the people who are close to him, and no doubt that he is protective of them all.
For all his convincing stoicism, Tenzin is a very emotional and reactive person a lot of the time as well, with a wide range of expressions and reactions, one notable occasion being when Korra mentions that Katara believed she was ready to head out and find her destiny only for Tenzin to go red in the face and tell her not to bring his mother into this. When caught off-guard and thrown out of balance, Tenzin's face broadcasts the fact openly and he can have his share of emotional outbursts. If he's shocked, saddened, disappointed, angered or concerned, he doesn't push it back and act like he's unaffected by what's happening. He feels, very simply put, and if it's not an appropriate time to get carried away by something emotional he's quick to collect himself and carry on (or when it's embarrassing that he's letting himself get carried away. Tenzin puts a lot of pride in being responsible and dedicated, and outbursts tend to go against that). If one of his children is frightened, he'll comfort them and try to fix it. If he doesn't know how to handle or approach a certain situation, he'll likely be flustered and flounder about it before trying to return to handling things calmly and maturely (he's not always so great at maturity, losing his temper at one point and informing the new police chief that he is the worst. ever.).
In sticking to a lot of the old air nomad ways, Tenzin appears to have an aversion to starting up direct confrontations in most situations. He disagrees vehemently with Tarrlok on several points during council meetings in the series, but when Tarrlok convinces the other members to vote on his side, he doesn't continue to voice his objections, instead resigning himself to the conclusion and working to find a way around it or to handle it. Even in combat as an airbender, he prefers to follow the principle of avoiding attacks and turning the moves of his opponents back against them somehow (catching equalist grappling hooks in a cyclone and using it to fling them away), for all that he doesn't always follow that principle (tossing away mechas and sending Amon flying off-stage with a direct blast of wind). He isn't typically the sort to initiate a conflict, seeming to prefer seeking out compromises or stopping things before they come to a head at all, but Tenzin also isn't afraid to fight if he has to. He'll willingly use airbending to defend himself and his loved ones, innocent people, his home... and he'll typically do a good job of it as well.
Long story short, a capable, confident man in almost every aspect of his life. He's emotional and obviously loves his family, while maintaining a strong spirituality and upholding a historical way of living. He's incredibly patient but prone to the occasional outburst, a good sympathetic ear (if an awkward one) and the kind of man who takes his responsibilities incredibly seriously. He'll sulk if things aren't going quite as planned, and pout and seek advice if he needs it, often genuinely unsure what to do if he doesn't... well, know what to do.
... Definitely the child of Aang and Katara.
Strengths: The wiki also provides some examples of his physical strength and abilities here, but I'll still summarize for the sake of summarizing.
Tenzin is an airbender and a trained master at that. This means he's able to control the element of air to suit his needs- whether that means blowing something away with a simple strong wind, summoning a cyclone or using an air-bubble to pass through dangerous gases safely. He's also skilled in utilizing his bending for combat purposes, seen doing as much in the series more than once (helping take down mecha tanks, facing off against Amon and his equalists), and Tenzin has spent a lifetime training/maintaining his airbending skills. He's light on his feet, capable of some stealth and in excellent health for his age, with good reflexes.
Tenzin's also a reserved and spiritual man, naturally inclined towards compromise in place of aggression (but not afraid to put up a fight if the situation calls for it). His dedication to the air nomad lifestyle and the training of his students is intense, and he's a pretty capable teacher for the most part. He's adept in helping people to calm down and look at things rationally, as well as being very patient (see: any efforts made to teach Korra airbending and the value of patience, reason and getting in touch with her spiritual side). He also has a lot of empathy for others and an understanding that emotions are meant to be felt and understood rather than repressed- he encouraged Korra to come to terms with the fact that she felt afraid of Amon, giving her space to do it on her own and being there to comfort her later on.
Mentally, Tenzin is very competent. He's intelligent and usually level-headed, capable of strategy and organization; which he would have to be, considering he manages to balance being one of Republic City's council heads, the last airbending master in the world (responsible for training his pupils and later responsible for effectively training the Avatar), and a husband and father of three with a fourth on the way all at the same time. It's certainly nothing to sneeze at. And being of the combat type that revolves around mostly avoiding attacks and turning an opponent's strengths against them, he'd need to have a certain level of creativity, or intuition at the least.
Weaknesses: While he is a very skilled airbender and in good health, the most obvious of Tenzin's physical weaknesses is the fact that he's still just a human being. He can be injured or killed like any other typical human being, he can just put up a very good fight before he goes down. He gets knocked unconscious pretty regularly over the course of the season, actually. Being a bender makes nobody infallible- that much is a staple of the series.
While he's empathetic and relatively emotionally healthy, Tenzin's natural inclination towards stoicism can occasionally make him come across as somewhat detached, possibly hindering his ability to connect with some people. Broaching important or awkward emotional matters with others tends to see him flustered and floundering, especially when dealing with Korra's more belligerent attitude (teenagers are not his strongest point). His past relationship with Lin Bei Fong seems to be something that he allows to have an impact on his interaction with her in present day. He believes in addressing emotional issues and distress, staying in touch with one's spirituality and flowing with change, but sometimes he has trouble with doing that himself. He's inclined to stoicism and the weight of his responsibilities, but has a terrible poker face and a bit of trouble in maintaining calm. He cheers during the first pro-bending match he watches Korra participating in, then quickly rights himself and takes his leave like he never had the outburst. When he's caught off-guard, it shows, usually to the result of comical rage and a range of very noticeable facial expressions. He's more than able to lose his patience and his temper, though he's a slow fuse. He has people he loves more than anything, and they can be used against him.
While intelligent and capable, Tenzin is still not a genius, and he doesn't claim to be. He tends to try to think the best of people and give them a chance, and is able to be fooled. Tarrlok was able to convince him that the equalists had taken Korra until he'd seen the base (and her absence from it) for himself. And while he's strong enough to make it known when he disagrees strongly about something, especially in council matters, he's also not the sort to get into a drawn-out confrontation on most matters, going along if he's outvoted for lack of anything else to do. He can still be strict, stubborn and very set in his ways (not that it's impossible to change his outlook on some things, pro-bending being a notable example), something that causes him and Korra to butt heads a bit in the earlier episodes.
